In an ironic twist of technological fate, Nvidia’s biggest customers — the same companies that helped fuel its meteoric rise during the AI revolution — may soon become its fiercest competitors.

“The gap between Nvidia and Google’s TPUs has narrowed significantly in the past year. If Google sells its systems externally, demand would be enormous — especially from frontier AI labs.”

Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta: Chipping Away at Dependency
While Google leads in AI chip maturity, other Big Tech players aren’t far behind.
- Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips are already deployed across its massive cloud network. The second-generation Trainium2 chips are central to Amazon’s partnership with Anthropic, one of the top AI developers.

Bank of America’s Vivek Arya and DA Davidson’s Gil Luria both maintain that the Nvidia competitive threat is limited because the AI market itself is expanding rapidly.
“Nvidia won’t grow as fast as the market,” Luria explained, “but because the market is growing so fast, they’ll still be able to grow.”
Nvidia has also invested heavily in AI startups and infrastructure — with over $47 billion in AI venture investments since 2020, according to PitchBook. By supporting “neocloud” companies like CoreWeave, Nvidia is effectively creating new customer pipelines that offset any business lost to hyperscalers.
The Real Challenge: Execution and Differentiation
Despite all the buzz around custom silicon, building a competitive chip ecosystem is incredibly difficult.
Designing, fabricating, and optimizing chips at Nvidia’s level of sophistication requires billions in R&D and years of iterative improvement. Many Big Tech efforts could falter due to cost, complexity, or delays.
As Seaport’s Goldberg noted:
“The drawback of doing your own silicon is that it’s hard. Not all of them will succeed.”
This suggests that Nvidia’s dominance — though challenged — remains secure for now. Its pace of innovation, from the Hopper and Blackwell architectures to Grace CPUs and NVLink networking, keeps it well ahead of most competitors.
Competition Is Growing, But Nvidia’s Lead Still Looks Secure
